SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching
A member of the Buffalo State community since 1999, Dr. Jim Mayrose joined the University as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology in 2006, eventually rising to the rank of full professor in 2015. From 2012 to 2015, Dr. Mayrose served as chair of the Engineering Technology Department before being named Dean of the School of the Professions from July 2015 through January 2019. During the 2017–2018 academic year, he temporarily stepped aside from the deanship to provide leadership as the college’s Interim Chief Information Officer and Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing, and Communications. Mayrose was promoted to Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2019 and served in that role until 2024.
In 2009, Mayrose was honored with the Buffalo State President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and, in 2015, received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
An accomplished entrepreneur, Mayrose was invited to the White House in 2014 to receive the prestigious Tibbetts Award for Innovation from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Dr. Mayrose was the CEO and founding partner of Tactus Technologies Inc., a maker of virtual reality products for the education and industrial training fields. The company garnered more than $6 million in federal research grants.
From 1991 to 2006, Mayrose served in various research capacities with the University at Buffalo’s departments of Emergency Medicine, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Physiology and Biophysics. He also worked at Grumman Aerospace Corporation in Bethpage, New York, from 1989 to 1991 as an Associate Configuration Engineer supporting the F-14 fighter aircraft program.
Dr. Mayrose earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University at Buffalo in 2000. He also holds M.S, degree in Mechanical Engineering (1993) and B.S. in Aerospace Engineering (1989) from the same institution. He has published over 40 original research manuscripts and over 45 abstracts in peer reviewed journals, presented this research at local, national and international meetings and received over $10 Million in funded research from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, Department of Education, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Dr. Mayrose is a recipient of multiple awards including Tibbetts Award for Innovation from the U.S. Small Business Administration (2014); ASEE Best Paper Award for Virtual Environments with Academic Applications paper (2011); Innovation Award – Amherst Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards (2011); Life Sciences Achievement Award - Niagara Frontier Intellectual Property Law Association and Technical Societies Council (2005); Inventor of the Year - Niagara Frontier Intellectual Property Law Association and Technical Societies Council (2004); Outstanding Faculty Member Award - Campus Life, SUNY Buffalo State (2010 & 2014).
